Beautiful watercolour journal

This one's self published in 2013, printed by CreateSpace. Paperback. 62 pages total. About A4 size.

It's a travelogue sketchbook filled with snapshots of Venice in beautiful watercolour sketches. There are the beautiful buildings by water, gondolas, cafes, people and the intricate architecture of the whole place.

I like how he pulls out the little details for more focus, it could be a cup of coffee, statues, hanging lamps, or the fish sold at the markets. There are captions but too brief though. I would love to read more about the place, or even about his adventures while drawing there.

It's a nice addition to the other Venice sketchbooks that I have, namely A Week In Venice by Liz Steel, The Venice Sketchbook by Fabrice Moireau.

Fantastic Book

What a terrific book. The art work is beautiful and it captures the look and the feel of
the city. I hope to find more such travel journals by this artist.

Another thing that is really so great about this book. It's price is $16.00. Not 15.95; not 15.99. It is
$16.00. I wish other publishers would have the guts and the respect for our intelligence to
price their products accordingly.

Fun way to visit Venice

I bought the Venice watercolor travel journal since I have other artists' watercolor journals and enjoy comparing the precise illustrations to the
more relaxed approach in others. In this book, Joaquin Dorao seems to have hit a happy medium. His watercolors are neatly done and the
various sites of an area in Venice are grouped to make an interesting presentation and a fun travelogue.

great little atlas to get thru anatomy as an undergraduate

what a great little book, it covers all the systems of the human body, anatomy atlas for the muscles, bones, nerves, and cardiovascular system. it is perfect to throw into your schoolbag or handbag so you can study anytime - anywhere. Every thing that was on my tests are covered in this book. It is printed on high quality glossy paper and the images of the human body are very detailed. they even have a chapter on child birth and human diseases broken down by organ system. the perfect little book to get you thru your first year of anatomy and physiology as an undergraduate.

THE BEST!!!

I bought this book on vacation before I even began taking Anatomy and Phys (a prerequisite to the nursing program). I just wanted to know a little more about what I was going to be learning. I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN! The illustrations are really good, labeled well with simple and concise explanations. It's a little to big to fit "in your pocket" but easily fits in your purse or front pocket of your bookbag. I carried it around everywhere while I took A&P - much easier than lugging the big A&P textbook to the doctor's office, laundrymat, etc. I still keep it in my bookbag now and in class if the instructor says, "As you'll recall learning XYZ in anatomy..." I can whip it out and look it up quickly to refresh my memory. GREAT BOOK!!! My four-year-old likes to "study" this book while I'm studying - enjoyable even for preschoolers!

Not as good as the reviews said and less than I expected

First of all, I already have Netter's Atlas of Human Anatomy, 3rd Edition. I was looking for a more general, simpler atlas of anatomy with explantion of fundamental physiology without the complexities that Netter's incorporates into almost all cross-sections/plates.

The positive things about this book is that it has good and easy to understand guides on physiology and common illnesses. Almost all major body parts are described with clear to-the-point short paragraphs.

However, even though the book is full of color illustrations on every page, they are over-simplified to the extent that many are either out of proportion or poorly drawn. For example, on the page where it's describing how air and food pass through the laryx then food goes to esophagus and air goes into trachea, the three diagrams there show different sizes for epiglottis and pharynx, even though apparently it's explaining the same system!!! I would really have to say the diagrams/illustrations are at most middle school level, exactly what you would expect from a middle school biology textbook. The only redeeming quality is the succinct tutorials.

I would higly suggest another beginner's and general atlas that has much higher quality illustrations and is much more accurate than this one. I strongly recommend "Essential Atlas of Anatomy" which has excellent diagrams at almost the same quality level as Netter's but without being too complicated for beginners and 1st and 2nd year medical students to understand.

If you are already fairly familiar with human anatomy but are actually looking for a simple atlas of physiology then this would suffice. Since you already know the correct anatomical proportion and position the inaccuracies in the book wouldn't affect you. Beginners please DO NOT get this book for anatomy studies, you'll have trouble later on when you approach more advanced books due to the errors you picked up from the less-than-desirable drawings in this little book.

Among his lasting contributions are his writings on natural history and philosophy, where he anticipated the methods and findings of ecology and environmental history, two sources of modern-day environmentalism. His literary style interweaves close natural observation, personal experience, pointed rhetoric, symbolic meanings, and historical lore, while displaying a poetic sensibility, philosophical austerity, and "Yankee" love of practical detail. He was also deeply interested in the idea of survival in the face of hostile elements, historical change, and natural decay; at the same time he advocated abandoning waste and illusion in order to discover life's true essential needs. He was a lifelong abolitionist, delivering lectures that attacked the Fugitive Slave Law while praising the writings of Wendell Phillips and defending abolitionist John Brown. Thoreau's philosophy of civil disobedience later influenced the political thoughts and actions of such notable figures as Leo Tolstoy, Mahatma Gandhi, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Thoreau is sometimes cited as an anarchist. Though Civil Disobedience seems to call for improving rather than abolishing government - "I ask for, not at once no government, but at once a better government" - the direction of this improvement points toward anarchism: "'That government is best which governs not at all;' and when men are prepared for it, that will be the kind of government which they will have." Richard T. Drinnon partly blames Thoreau for the ambiguity, noting that Thoreau's "sly satire, his liking for wide margins for his writing, and his fondness for paradox provided ammunition for widely divergent interpretations of 'Civil Disobedience'."

About the Author

Henry David Thoreau was born in 1817 in Concord, Massachusetts. He spent time as a school teacher after attending Harvard College but was dismissed for his refusal to administer corporal punishment. In 1845, wanting to write his first book, he moved to Walden Pond and built his cabin on land owned by Ralph Waldo Emerson. It was during his time at Walden that Thoreau was imprisoned briefly for not paying taxes; this experience became the basis for his well-known essay "Civil Disobedience." He died of tuberculosis in 1862 at the age of 44.

Thoreau is Wonderful

I must admit that I wouldn't have read a book about the lore of apples in the 1800s had it not been rather short in length and written by the amazing Henry Thoreau. But as it was, it contained the unmatched descriptions and fervent passion that is so evident in all of Thoreau's writings. I wouldn't recommend this work to anybody that isn't a follower of Thoreau, but for those of us that are, this writing about apples is a quick easy read that inspires you to take a stroll outside with an apple in your hand.

very interesting

This book might not be for everyone. It was the first of Thoreau that I have read, and might seem a bit "plodding" to some readers. However, I find his exploration of wild apples, their origin, and how they spread across the country to be quite interesting. Also, his appraisal of the flavors of wild apples compared with our cultivated species reminded me that what we find in our groceries is often just not the same as the flavors of plants from the wild or from our own gardens. And enjoyable read for a winter's evening.

A Literary Jewel On This Most Perfect Food Throughout History !

What's not to like about an apple?
Thoreau explains that the apple was the
foundation of Rome. This fruit symbolizes
peace as does the olive in an olive branch.

This perfect fruit was mentioned by Homer
and Herodotus. Pliny calls apples by the
name urbaniores. This wonderful fruit first
surfaces the beginning of August and begins
to fade toward the end of November as the
winter quickly approaches.

Thoreau's book is a treasure chest of pertinent
information about the apple and its literary
and historical significance.
