About the Author
Meizhong Wang has been teaching electronics, physics, computing and maths at college level in Canada for 20 years. She has also taught Electric Circuits and Mandarin at universities in China and Canada, respectively. Meizhong and Lily Chow published the book Legends of Four Chinese Sages in 2007. David Canter, Professor of Psychology at the University of Liverpool, England, is a fellow of the American Psychological Association and a chartered Forensic Psychologist. Dr. Canter is the winner of the Golden Dagger Award for Crime nonfiction and the Anthony Award for Best True Crime.

Chapter One

A BETTER NET

In July 1980 the body of an eight-year-old girl was found by the roadside in Staffordshire, 164 miles from where she had been abducted. For eleven years a coordinated search by six police forces was unable to find the man who had killed her. During that time two more young girls were murdered by the same man, and at least two others were abducted by him, escaping alive. Investigators were stumped-as they often are, and admitted little hope of ever catching him, until a suspicious neighbor tipped police.

The search for the child's murderer highlights the problem of finding a criminal when there is no known connection between him and his victim. Though modern police forces can fill rooms with details of possible suspects, they are faced with the enormous task of finding the one deadly needle in their haystack of paper.

Is there an alternative to waiting for a criminal to make a mistake? Can huge resources and fast computers avoid the need for the killer to "reveal his hand", as in the 1980 case, when the killer doubled back unaware that he had been noticed? Must investigators hope for "good luck", for an alert neighbour who happens to be in his garden at the right time? Must detectives rely on glimpses caught by witnesses, known modus operandi of convicted villains and house-to-house trawls to snag possible suspects?

Despite the use of a specially-dedicated, vast computer system containing details of thousands of suspects, a solitary, middle-aged man, named Robert Black, who had first been convicted of assaults on children a quarter of a century earlier at the age of sixteen, completely eluded police inves-tigators as the serial murderer. Until his fortuitous capture in September 1991, countrywide searches had failed even to include his name as one of the 185,000 people whose details had been amassed.

Senior police officers leading the investigation privately admitted that they were likely to catch him only if he "showed his hand" again. This euphemism proved accurate. A village shopkeeper, working in his garden on a hot summer's day, saw a six-year-old girl being forced into a van. He called the police who stopped the van when it returned through the village. The girl's father was the police officer who opened the van doors to find his terror-stricken daughter inside, bound in a sleeping bag, almost suffocated.

Subsequent inquiries led to Black's arrest and conviction for the murder of three young girls as well as the abduction of a fourth.

It is now possible to bring all this intensive activity and high technology into sharper focus by studying the way a criminal embraces the crime, and how he chooses to commit it.

A criminal indicates something about himself from the way he acts; something that will help sift the possible sus-pects or even point to places where a likely suspect may be found

To implement new ways of focusing police inves-tigations, we must find the answer to a fundamental question: specifically what does a criminal reveal about himself by the way he commits a crime?

A criminal may divulge what shoes he wore from his footprints. His blood type can be determined from any body fluids left at the scene. But he leaves more at the crime scene than these material traces. He also leaves psychological traces, telltale patterns of behavior that indicate the sort of person he is. These traces are more ambiguous and subtle than those examined by the biologist or physicist. They cannot be taken into a laboratory and dissected under a microscope. They are more like shadows, undoubtedly connected to the criminal who cast them, but they flicker and change, and their origins may not always be obvious. Yet, if they can be interpreted, criminals' shadows can indicate where investigators should look and what sort of person they should look for.

Changes in the law, and the growing pressures on police forces around the world mean that they are increasingly in need of such help. The lone detective, so popular in fiction, has given way to organized teams that require systematic guidance. Senior police officers are seizing applied scientific psychology as a way out of this impasse.

Enormous strides have been made in analyzing material clues, while the interpretation of psychological shadows has made only a few faltering first steps. This book is an account of my involvement, as a psychologist, in a number of police investigations in which I took some of those steps.

Pioneers in Profiling

In trying to interpret criminals' shadows, I follow many other footsteps. People throughout the ages have expressed views about how to identify a criminal in a crowd. Shakespeare, for example, has Julius Caesar making what later proves to be an accurate prediction.

The idea that thoughtful, lean and hungry-looking men were potential criminals, or that certain physiognomy or physique are typical of murderers or thieves is steeped in generalized, untested notions about characteristics that are typical of many different types of people. Similar stereotypes exist today in racial prejudice that assumes certain actions are typical of people with a particular skin color. The blossoming of biology, medicine and psychology in the last century challenged such superficial views that a person's appearance could be correlated in any way with expected behaviors. In particular, medicine had shown that madness and evil could be seen as illnesses, rather than the result of witchcraft and demon-possession.

After Daniel M'Naghten was acquitted of murder "by reason of insanity" in 1843, physicians became more in-volved in the legal process, especially in determining whether the accused suffered from "mental illness" produced by brain dysfunction.

Dr. Canter's book is the best book I have read on the subject of criminal profiling. Unlike most other books on the topic, like the ones written by former FBI profilers, Dr. Canter lucidly explains how to construct a profile of serial rapists and killers. This book is also an introduction to Investigative Psychology, a field of study developed by Dr. Canter et. al. Worth reading for anyone interested in serial murder and criminal profiling.

This was a really boring book. You would think that a book about profiling serial killers would at least be interesting, but its not. He basically talks about his personal experiences in studying/profiling murderers. I bought this book for a profiling methodology class and I really wish I could return it.

PreS-K-A wintry village inhabited by a variety of unlikely creatures is the setting for this rhyming tale about how the efforts of a humble baker restore the sun to a chilled world. Bellicose bears, argumentative monkeys, a lachrymose pig, and a depressed giraffe are among the distressed animals pictured. It's not until the town's baker, an innovative little dog, bakes a smiling bread in the shape of the sun that the residents have reason to rejoice and hope. As they share in the feast, their bodies as well as their spirits are so lightened that they rise into the sky. There they make such a joyful noise that the long-slumbering sun is awakened. The baker somehow intuits that it wants some of his special loaf and the happy villagers share it with the celestial body. Sunlight is restored to the Earth and returns the next day for the little baker's promised sun bread and buns. A recipe is included. This sunny tale is marred by an uneven rhyme scheme and awkward phrasing. The story also suffers from a certain incongruity and lack of logic as well. Why are tropical animals depicted in such an alien environment? Why does the sun want to eat sun bread? Kleven's characteristically charming folk-art-inspired collages far outshine the text in this instance.

Wonderful Inspiring Book-making and sharing Bread-comfort

This book is just a wonderful story of a solution to unhappiness, frustration, due to a difficult situation. I make bread and have made the bread in this shape so many times and shared it! Each time I shared it, I could feel the love and the expression of thankfulness, peace, comfort, and joy! What wonderful ideas and feelings to have in this world. I did use a different bread recipe, but the concept is still the same, sharing the Sun with all it's cheerfulness, shedding light on everyone and everything, eradicating darkness and gloom, with all of us being reflections of the Sun. Beaming. I use this book to share with others the love of baking bread. We do it in groups, which have included elderly and a 2 yr old with her mother. While mixing the dough, she remarked with a big smile, "Look! Mommy. I'm cookin!" All of our eyes will filled with joy, and a little tear of happiness. Thank you for writing and illustrating this.

A family tradition

This is a delightful story, beautifully illustrated, and my children love it. We have started the tradition of reading this story on the winter solstice and making the sun bread recipe at the back of the book. It isn't the most delicious bread, but it puffs up impressively and it's a fun project for the kids.

Smiles Inside and Out...

Here's another book that I purchased because I loved the cover art. (I wish we had a poster with that illustration on it!) There is something very cheerful about the smiling Sun and a ring of happy animals celebrating it. This is a beautiful, "feel good" book inside and out, in both text and illustration, in message. I was surprised to discover that the back cover had a recipe for Sun Bread, which I am tempted to try--even with my limited cooking abilities! LOL I thought the recipe note was brilliant and ever so funny: "This bread, alas, won't make you fly. But it is heavenly--light and high!" Could happiness be as simple as a warm loaf of good bread? :D

I like the book's message on how one really should take responsibility for one's own happiness as the little baker does in this tale. This book is worth sharing and reading aloud.

I have become a huge fan of Elisa Kleven's work, and I recommend this book as a remedy for rain and / or wintry days, for family time, and for in-school story time. Another great story is "The Lion and the Little Red Bird."

This a great introduction to cults around the world who practice the Magick of the Left Hand Path. It shows that such practices spring up spontaneously, and therefore are somehow deeply imbedded in our consciousness, destined to spring up from time-to-time and place-to-place.

the 3rd of the Typhonian trilogies

These Skoob books are great reprints of Kenneth Grant's earlier works. This one is originally printed in 1975. There are 9 books in the trilogies. Grant has been around for a while and already had a strong background in tantric and buddhist knowledge when he became Crowley's secretary.
He is believed to have been granted the OHO (10th and highest degree) in the O.'.T.'.O.'. and in that capacity founded an operative lodge called Nu Isis which explored and laid a foundation for many of his further works.
In regards to this particular book Grant takes an eclectic approach which attempts to find in gematria values hidden links which lie between the ancient rites of Egypt, Crowley's A.'.A.'., Theosophy, Vedic/Tantric, ancient African cults and voudon Gnosis. His chapter on Michael Bertiaux's Voudon Gnostic teachings is a good introduction to a great modern gnostic thinker/teacher.
Additionally the inclusion of several pages of illustrations by Austin Osman Spare, Steffi Grant(his wife)and others makes these books a worthwhile inclusion in a library.

Typhonian Life Goes On

I now own 6 of Grant's 9 books of the Typhonian trilogies; and every one is a treasure trove of dark strangeness. I really wish someone would print some cheaper editions of them all, as the last two were only published in editions of 1500 each, and are very expensive now. But for anyone who wants to take a walk on the wild side of occultism, I highly recommend Grant's works. Pick up any one and give it a try. Egyptian death and sex magick, Kabbalah, Crowleyian workings, dark tantra...it's all here.
