Most refreshing way to learn about nutrition

This book is written from a Biblical perspective, by a doctor who has studied in-depth the topic of nutrition and how it affects your health. Having read numerous diet and nutrition books, this book is absolutely the most refreshing. It is not a diet book, but a way of thinking about how nutrition intertwines with your spiritual life and your health.

The chapters are fairly short and simple to read, but pack a powerful amount of knowledge and examples that are thought-provoking. The book is set up similar to a Bible study, if you choose, with questions and thoughts at the end of each chapter to engage you and cause you to interact with the material.

It is NOT legalistic in its approach to nutrition and changes. One of my favorite parts of the book is a suggestion of small, simple, week-by-week adaptions you can make to your current lifestyle. These are a realistic "how-to". Dr. Scott Stoll is a man of integrity and follows his own advice with his family. His web site has wonderful information; participating in a webcast or conference will also be invaluable to you.

This book would make a great Sunday School class study which could be done in about 8 weeks (each chapter is a "day", giving you five "days"/chapters each week).

Fascinating Memoir

F.A. Cotton, the famous inorganic chemist, studied at Drexel and Temple as an undergraduate, then went to Harvard for his Ph.D.
where his research director was Geoffrey Wilkinson. Later, Cotton joined the faculty at MIT for several years before moving to
Texas A&M for the final portion of his career. This book is his memoir, and includes many details of his research in a narrative form
illustrated by a great many structural formulas and experimental data such as photoelectron spectra. There are literature references for 1620 of his publications dating from 1950-2006. Cotton died mysteriously in Texas, apparently murdered. Few details are given .
The book runs chronologically by decade, and mentions many of the 119 PhD students he supervised( all are listed in an appendix, together with
more than 100 postdoctoral fellows who worked under his direction). Cotton is lavish in praise for many of these individuals, many of whom appear in the many photographs.
Cotton loves horses and dogs, and some parts of his book concern his animals and his penchant for hunting to hounds. The frontispiece of the book shows the author on one of his mounts.
With Wilkinson, Cotton did some of the first studies of ferrocene and other cyclopentadienyl metal complexes. Wilkinson and E.O Fischer
eventually were awarded a Nobel prize for this research. At MIT, Cotton began to study transition metal complexes with metal-metal bonds-
at the time a great novelty.A hallmark of his work was the extensive use of X-ray crystallography-routine now but rare for preparative chemists
at the time. Much of the work concerned rhenium , but later included many other transition metals.
Cotton traveled very extensively, giving lectures and receiving honors in Germany, France, Russia, Israel, Japan and other countries. There are interesting stories about these travels, including his impressions and friendships with dozens of fellow chemists in these countries.
There is a section of the book telling Cotton's relations with Wilkinson. Of course they collaborated in writing a successful Advanced Inorganic Chemistry text that has run to 6 editions and been translated into several languages. Unfortunately there are some very negative
comments about Wilkinson here : his tendency to belittle other chemists, and treat them disrespectfully. Cotton is very explicit about this.
Near the end of the book, Cotton becomes very philosophical about his life. He also states clearly that he has no use for religion.
In a final appendix appears Cotton's Priestley medal address of 1998. He speaks of a '"Golden Age" of chemical research which he believes is
coming to an end because of the public's distrust of the value of basic research as opposed to research leading to immediate commercial
profits. He criticizes the increased bureaucracy involved in research funding and university administration , and recommends that the budget of the National Science Foundation be doubled.
I found the book very absorbing.I read it quite quickly, and recognized some of his people and situations since I was a graduate student at Harvard from 1957-1962 shortly after Cotton and Wilkinson moved on. But we still heard a lot about them, and Wilkinson came back to lecture
at least once. Harvard did not grant him tenure, but some regretted it later. I and some other Harvard students went down to MIT to take
Cotton's group theory course( which he later developed into a book). This was a valuable experience.

The life and discoveries of a giant of Inorganic Chemistry

It is fortunate that, thanks to his friends and coworkers, the autobiography of the late Professor F. Albert Cotton (1930-2007) has been published posthumously in 2014. Cotton is known for his discovery (in 1964) of multiple metal-metal bonds, specifically the quadruple Re-Re bond in the Re2Cl8 dianion, which appeared in the journal Science. Furthermore, other important discoveries made by the Cotton's group are those of fluxional organometallic molecules, a new type of intramolecular interactions later named "agostic interactions", molecular machines (although the organometallic complexes synthesized at that time were not called so), and extended metal atom chains (EMACSs).
In addition to advancing the field of inorganic chemistry, Cotton was a scholar concerned with the education of students; he wrote (either alone or in collaboration) many influential books such Basic Inorganic Chemistry (now in its 3-rd edition), Advanced Inorganic Chemistry (now in its 6-th edition), Multiple Bonds Between Metal Atoms (now in its 3-rd edition), and Chemical Applications of Group Theory (now in its 3-rd edition). When I started my chemistry studies at the university, I studied inorganic chemistry from Cotton and Wilkinson's Advanced Inorganic Chemistry (this was the translation in Italian of an early edition of the book). This autobiography is a pleasure to read and I highly recommend it to both students and professionals.

Horrible textbook. It needs to be about 1/2 as ...

Horrible textbook. It needs to be about 1/2 as long, and 2/3 of the equations are redundant and/or misleading.

The text is written to the professors rather than the 1st or 2nd year engineering students who have to try and make sense out of it. Most passages read about as smoothly as the King James version of the Bible. The jargon is unnecessarily dense (understatement).

Disappointing, because Beer's Statics book is one of the finer textbooks you'll ever come across. Mechanics of Materials employs none of the conceptual or linguistic economy present in that book. This book does nothing but muddy the waters for undergrad engineers who probably don't have the spare time available to seek out someone who can actually explain it to them.

good book ...purchased it for my college son; but unfortunate how publishers continue to have additional editions to raise the price -- I taught this course with this author 30 yrs ago and guess what .. the topics are timeless; at least come in paperback to assist college students and parents with costs. 4 stars b/c of inflated cost practices.

About the Author
Michael Bailey is Lecturer in the Department of Sociology at the University of Essex. He has held visiting fellowships at Goldsmiths, University of London, the ESRC Centre for Research on Socio-Cultural Change (a collaboration between the Open University and the University of Manchester), the London School of Economics, Wolfson College and the Centre for Research in the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities, University of Cambridge. Guy Redden teaches cultural studies at the University of Sydney. He has previously lectured at Prince of Songkla University, Thailand, the University of Queensland, Australia, where he earned his PhD, and Lincoln University in the UK. He has published widely about the commodification of religion and alternative cultures. His articles include 'The New Age: Towards a Market Model', Journal of Contemporary Religion, 20(2), 2005; and 'The New Agents: Personal Transfiguration and Radical Privatisation in New Age Self-Help', Journal of Consumer Culture 2(1), 2002. Multi-faceted and Insightful

This fascinating work - which delves deep into myths from around the world and shows startling parallels - is a must-have for anyone who is interested in the study of ethnology, comparative religions, mythology, the development of civilizations, etc. and so forth - in other words, just about anyone who is interested in where we, as humanity, have been and where we are going.

The author shows where parallel myths have developed between cultures where there is no known contact and speculates, via various models, on how this might have happened. Myths are presented from the typical Greek, Roman and Norse, through Egyptian, Semitic, Polynesian and various Native American tribal myths as well as Incan and Aztec.

I was particularly interested (having managed to get this far in my life and not been exposed to much in the way of Norse/Germanic mythology or Wagnerian opera) by how much Tolkien borrowed for his LotR series from said sources. I was also appalled in many instances by the extreme bloodiness of some of the Egyptian myths - most of them seemed to end badly, which made me wonder . . . I shall now have to do further research (oh, drat - now I'll have to go buy books . . )

Although scholarly in nature, the work is engaging and accessible to the lay reader and in this reader's humble opinion, should be added to the reading list of as many individuals as possible. A definite recommend from me.

Great set of books. DON'T buy them seperately.

As has been stated before, anyone who wants to use the Chinese series books should get at least three -
1. Bluish color, with lessons (mostly dialogues) in pinyin and English
2. Red book, with exercises and grammar notes for the first blue one
3. Yellow book, for character practice.
There is also a green book that has all the lessons from the blue book translated into traditional and simplified characters, which could have been useful to me, if I had only known of its existance...
The three books set comes in two versions, one in pinyin, and
one in GR, here's the explanation:
Pinyin is the standard romanization of Chinese in the People's Republic of China, so native speakers should be familiar with it more - important if you want to take a tutor.
Gr is a kind of romanization that is apparently very popular for teaching to foreigners. Most Chinese people are not used to it, however. So I guess it's better for professional teachers.
Bottom line, ask your tutor/teacher which version they recommend.
If you're not sure, I'd recommend the pinyin - it worked for me so far.
I've been using first three for about 4 months, and I'm already able to use Chinese in simple conversations. Mind you, you need to put a some time and effort and a lot of patience every day for this to work. The people who wrote the book recommended using the Gr set, but I found the pinyin much easier. Just stick to the instructions inside, don't rush things, and follow the yellow brick road!!

Unfortunately, the other two (so far) reviews are incorrect

This set is not merely the blue book, but instead all but the green book (dialog text in Chinese characters). That fact is plainly stated in the description itself. Please keep this in mind when reading the other reviews. As for my opinion of the set, I certainly think this is one (three?) of the better Chinese textbooks available, and was what I used when I was a Chinese major at the introductory level.

This book is a fairly all-inclusive 'primer' on Chinese, set into conversation format. No formal lessons are provided, nor is an English or character translation. This book is of little use to any amateur Chinese student without the other three 'Chinese Primer' books.

Written in the present tense, First They Killed My Father will put you right in the midst of the action--action you'll wish had never happened. It's a tough read, but definitely a worthwhile one, and the author's personality and strength shine through on every page. Covering the years from 1975 to 1979, the story moves from the deaths of multiple family members to the forced separation of the survivors, leading ultimately to the reuniting of much of the family, followed by marriages and immigrations. The brutality seems unending--beatings, starvation, attempted rape, mental cruelty--and yet the narrator (a young girl) never stops fighting for escape and survival. Sad and courageous, her life and the lives of her young siblings provide quite a powerful example of how war can so deeply affect children--especially a war in which they are trained to be an integral part of the armed forces. For anyone interested in Cambodia's recent history, this book shares a valuable personal view of events. --Jill Lightner

In 1975, Ung, now the national spokesperson for the Campaign for a Landmine-Free World, was the five-year-old child of a large, affluent family living in Phnom Penh, the cosmopolitan Cambodian capital. As extraordinarily well-educated Chinese-Cambodians, with the father a government agent, her family was in great danger when the Khmer Rouge took over the country and throughout Pol Pot's barbaric regime. Her parents' strength and her father's knowledge of Khmer Rouge ideology enabled the family to survive together for a while, posing as illiterate peasants, moving first between villages, and then from one work camp to another. The father was honest with the children, explaining dangers and how to avoid them, and this, along with clear sight, intelligence and the pragmatism of a young child, helped Ung to survive the war. Her restrained, unsentimental account of the four years she spent surviving the regime before escaping with a brother to Thailand and eventually the United States is astonishing--not just because of the tragedies, but also because of the immense love for her family that Ung holds onto, no matter how she is brutalized. She describes the physical devastation she is surrounded by but always returns to her memories and hopes for those she loves. Her joyful memories of life in Phnom Penh are close even as she is being trained as a child soldier, and as, one after another, both parents and two of her six siblings are murdered in the camps. The Human Dimension of the Khmer Rouge Genocide

Loung Ung's book FIRST THEY KILLED MY FATHER is an intimate, personal account of life under Cambodia's genocidal Khmer Rouge. Its emotion and urgency give the reader a sense of what it was like to be there -- to suffer as Ung and her family suffered and to see the horrors that they saw. The book thus provides a crucial supplement to drier, more academic accounts of the Khmer Rouge regime, which typically are written at a distance in order to preserve an aura of objectivity. Ung is not in the business of providing a dry, historical account of what happened to her country; rather, her purpose is to share the raw, often brutal, story of what happened to her.
Ung's book provides a human framework for coming to terms with the madness of the Khmer Rouge. Instead of remaining decontextualized victims -- remarkable only for their suffering and identical to the victims of countless other tragedies -- Ung's family and the people she meets gain the dignity of personal qualities and individuality. Through the eyes of the child that she was at the time, Ung forces us to see her family and acquaintances not just as statistics or haunted faces glimpsed on television, but as people with lives that began before the tragic period of the book and that, at least in a few cases, continued after the events described in the book were over.

Ung's story is heartbreaking but her own persistence, fortitude, and ultimate triumph inspire. Furthermore, in an age where tragedy and genocide have seemingly become commonplace, Ung's ability to heal after such a harrowing childhood is encouraging evidence that others, recovering from tragedies elsewhere, can do the same.

An incredible story written incredibly well

I've had a low-level interest in Cambodia under the Khmer Rouge since I saw "The Killing Fields" a few years ago. I've read a few things and was basically familiar with the history. However, I had no real appreciation for the brutality the Cambodian people endured for those 4 years until I read this book.
As somebody stated in an earlier review, I wondered (at first) how a 5 year old child could remember all of this. As I got further into the story, it occurred to me that no one could ever forget this sort of thing. In addition, Ung gives one of her older brothers credit for filling in some gaps. This book is VERY believable.
Ung writes about horrific events in a matter-of-fact style. She occaisionaly changes the point of view of the narration, which can be a bit confusing. But, overall, it's easy to follow the story. It's even easier to become drawn in to the story.
I put another book aside to read this. I'm glad I did.

It is a very good first book to introduce the Pol Pot era to ...

This book is being made into a film by Angelina Jolie due out late 2016. The author is Cambodian and now lives in Ohio managing to escape Cambodia. Having lived in Cambodia for a number of years and having written books on Cambodia myself i finally took up this book. It is a very good first book to introduce the Pol Pot era to readers with a linear narrative of a five year old girl's perspective detailing what occurred to her family over the Pol Pot period. A literary device used to expand her concentrated family perspective is creating a very inquisitive character in herself as a five year old girl asking domestic political questions on what is occurring under the Pol Pot regime. Her father is explained as knowing everything and so can answer all questions posed. In reality this cannot have occurred as five year old Cambodian children are not that inquisitive, nor do fathers answer political questions of them. Putting that to the side, and appreciating its use a device to tell the story of all Cambodians in a similar predicament it works very well. Well recommended as a good simply written but detailed read representing the greater populace.
