Ricoeur notes that when thinking about death the imagination is paramount, since we cannot truly experience our own passing. But those we leave behind do, and Ricoeur posits that the idea of life after death originated in the awareness of our own end posthumously resonating with our survivors.

The fragments in this volume were written over the course of the last few months of Ricoeur’s life as his health failed, and they represent his very last work. They cover a range of topics, touching on biblical scholarship, the philosophy of language, and the idea of selfhood he first addressed in Oneself as Another. And while they contain numerous philosophical insights, these fragments are perhaps most significant for providing an invaluable look at Ricoeur’s mind at work.

As poignant as it is perceptive, Living Up to Death is a moving testimony to Ricoeur’s willingness to confront his own mortality with serious questions, a touching insouciance, and hope for the future.

Director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and screenwriter Guillermo Arriaga are probably better known in the United States for their collaberations on the emotionally powerful 21 Grams and the more tepid Babel. Yet it was Amores Perros, made in their native Mexico City, that put them on the movie map. The Mexican film world was actually in the slumps when Amores Perros came around and it is noteworthy, as the author explains, that the movie was made outside of the normal and established avenues for Mexican film makers.

This monograph by the British Film Institute explores several aspects of the movie and the context of Mexican cinema in which it came about. Amores Perros is an ambitious picture and the behind the scenes story of making it on the low budget available is interesting in and of itself.

Like 21 Grams and Babel, Amores Perros is one movie involving several stories that become interwoven with each other through a single event. The author of this book, Paul Julian Smith, analyzes the various stories and digs below the surface to explore similarities among the characters who, on the surface, seem as different as can be. The themes of missing fathers, brotherly betrayal and the relationships people have with animals come up frequently. Inarritu's complex soundtrack is explored as are such issues as film quality and sound in order to demonstrate the 'differentness' yet similarities of the three stories the film follows.

The concept of mexicanidad (Mexican-ness) is also frequently brought to the surface in Smith's review of the movie. A good movie, however, transcends the geographical boundaries in which it is made and where it is set. Amores Perros meets that standard and this BFI book is a good accompaniment for someone wanting a better understanding of the movie.

Great textbook

This is the best book to use to learn value stream mapping, and you can honestly use the insight gained by working through it to improve factory processes. Really.
I worked through the book myself over a hotel weekend, and then tried it out, and then read it again. I have honestly used Value Stream Mapping to take $5 million + (probably WAY+) worth of stupid out of the processes at my part of a factory that does about $30M per month in sales
The bad:
The book comes with a CD. It's worthless. If you buy a used copy without the CD, don't worry about it.

Update: OK, so this was interesting to come across a few years down the road... I bought this book and wrote the preceding review about 5 years ago. I got some very good results out the improvements that eventually came from mapping current state processes, and then mapping the future state, and then getting to work on the differences (lean mfg.). The engineers write the future state, and a Project manager figures out how to get there and prioritizes which problems to work in what order. So far, we've been able to take 5% out of cost in six months, and that's only because we don't have much practice.

Very clear step-by-step workbook

I saw this book referenced in several other books on the subject of Lean. I thought it was just an explanation of how to draw a value-stream map.
Actually, Learning To See is a real workbook. Most of its content explains how to draw a future-state map, step by step. And then how to link to policy deployment.
Very useful for a practitioner desiring to (1) write a diagnostic, (2) write an appropriate remedy, (3) make it obvious why the remedy is far superior to the current situation, and (4) formalize application of the remedy.

This book really deserve your attention. If you read "Lean Thinking" the book by Womack and Jones and you enjoyed it, you can't miss "Learning to see" as it goes deeply into the details of chapters 2 and 3 of the Womack-Jones work helping the reader to understand that an industry is not a no profit organization but an organization that need to make -and/or possibly not wasting - money.
In my experience almost every improvement acitivity must begin with a material-value flow analysis. In this standpoint this book has been for me illuminating.
I give to it 5 star because it has a strong practical touch and is rich of informations and hints -"draw the flow with a pencil, focus on the process not on how well you use the computer"...

Mauricio Salatino is a Senior software engineer at JBoss/RedHat. Mauricio works full time as a Drools and jBPM Core Developer and is in charge of developing the new generation Business Process Management Suite, along with contributing to the evolution of Drools and jBPM. Mauricio is the author of three Packt Publishing books about jBPM: jBPM6 Developer Guide, jBPM5 Developer Guide, and jBPM Developer Guide. Mauricio is based in London, UK, and in his spare time he likes to meet community members of different open source projects to build interesting projects.

Mariano De Maio

Mariano De Maio is an IT consultant and software developer with over eleven years of experience in Java and open source frameworks. He has been working with Drools and jBPM for the last six years and has collaborated with the Drools and jBPM projects several items, including Infinispan's persistence modules, extensions to the jBPM APIs, and different add-ons to the tooling functionality. In 2013, he wrote jBPM6 Developer Guide for Packt Publishing, along with Mauricio Salatino and Esteban Aliverti. In 2015, he co-founded jWoop, http://www.jwoop.com, which is a company that provides consultancy and training around the world. I had a driver who knoew the short routes and roads, remember that Sri Lanka is currently undergoing a major construction and infrastructure improvement currently so a lot of roads are being build or spruced so this map maybe dated
