NBC: America's Network

This is a well-edited book that clearly details the history of the NBC network. The chapters are written by several authors who are experts of NBC's different eras and this makes for interesting reading. This book is a must-read for anyone who is studying Communications, Radio and TV, PR, Journalism, or just plain interested in television history in America.

A Pleasant Surprise

I did not do any of homework on this book. I was expecting a work crammed with publicity photos along the lines of NBC's 75th birthday book: Bob Hope Specials, Daytime Soaps, life on the Ponderosa, Hill Street Blues, Miami Vice in living color.

This is not that.

Michelle Hilmes edited a serious study of the National Broadcasting Company. I learned how MCA (Lew Wasserman) saved NBC in the late 1950's and 60's. This in turn broadened my insight into Sonny Werblin's ownership of the AFL New York Jets (and Casey Wasserman's possible involvement with a future NFL team here in Los Angeles). I now understand why General Sarnoff and his son were destructive forces in the long run. And I rethought my estimation of Pat Weaver. He's still a giant, but a doomed one under Sarnoff. General Electric is (happily) leaving the scene at NBC. Comcast presents another chapter in the life of the company.

I am disappointed about the lack of insight into why NBC Radio was destroyed by GE or by Grant Tinker. Howard Stern's movie {Private Parts} draws a better picture of "creative destruction" at 30 Rock. A picture repeating itself on NBC Television now.

In sum, NBC America's Network is a very worthwhile work. CBS has dozens of books and films about it. ABC has many personal books about it by people who work there or at ESPN. Rupert Murdoch spun a small cottage industry about his media empire --and it is his-- of newspapers and Fox cable. NBC escaped until now.

Losing our common communications

While we, in the U.S., have been distracted by monkey-trial after monkey-trial, we have have missed seeing and preserving key elements of modern society and community. Broadcast media (radio) was a key element in moving democracy and connections across the North American continent. It worked. Then, we lost it.

NBC was both a prime player in the 20th century reinforcement of an American community. This study shows how it worked and then how it was lost. For anyone concerned about where we are (in politics, civics and, even, family and more) this is an informed guide.

Oh, yes. Well written and well researched.

Fancy title but no real substance

I read other people's reviews for this book before I purchased it,so based on that I bought the book. Now that I bought, I honestly do not recommend it to anyone. The book starts with questions and multiple choice answers for everything then you find the answers a few pages later.

There are no explanations for the answers or how the stuff works.Basically it is a look and memorize book without any theory of operation or coaching on how things work. The paper is cheap and the fonts are small, hard to read. Instructions are confusing. I do not recommend it at all.

Working on Sunshine

This book was what I needed. It was suggested to me and I have been using it to study. I studied for my A&P and wasn't sure which direction to move. This has been excellent. Has given me the general direction and the specifics I needed. Now I need time...but that's the way life rolls. Would recommend it highly. It's not a miracle or a magic wish. You still have to read and study, but if that's your dream and your goal this is the Right Tool in the Toolbox. Use it.

Great book

This book was extremely helpful. Arco to me is the most complete maker of these type of books that I have found. I needed this book to help me get examples to aide in taking a city lineman's exam and found this very helpful. It has a large number of examples and sections and it is really worth the money. Try to get it used, heck it's still worth getting even if its new. Pure gold.

About the Author

Benjamin Bengfort is a Data Scientist who lives inside the beltway but ignores politics (the normal business of DC) favoring technology instead. He is currently working to finish his PhD at the University of Maryland where he studies machine learning and distributed computing. His lab does have robots (though this field of study is not one he favors) and, much to his chagrin, they seem to constantly arm said robots with knives and tools; presumably to pursue culinary accolades. Having seen a robot attempt to slice a tomato, Benjamin prefers his own adventures in the kitchen where he specializes in fusion French and Guyanese cuisine as well as BBQ of all types. A professional programmer by trade, a Data Scientist by vocation, Benjamin's writing pursues a diverse range of subjects from Natural Language Processing, to Data Science with Python to analytics with Hadoop and Spark.

Rebecca is a data scientist at the U.S. Department of Commerce Data Service. She specializes in data visualization for machine learning and has given several talks related to improving the model selection process with visualization.

Tony is the founder of District Data Labs and focuses on applied analytics for business strategy. He has published a book on practical data science, and has experience with hands-on education and data science curricula.

'For Esme with Love and Squalor'

For 'Esme with Love and Squalor' is one of Salinger's best stories. It also appears in his first collection of stories called 'Nine Stories.'

It tells the story of an American G.I. who for one part of the story is in Devon England where he is in training. On one lonely day off he goes into a tea-room and meets an English child and her small brother. Her name is 'Esme' and she is a precocious beautiful and sensitive child with whom the G.I. has a friendly, and somewhat from his point- of- view ironic conversation. The language is pure Salingerese. The little brother acts up and is chided by his sister. He recites a riddle , : What did one wall say to another" and hilariously gives the answer "Meet you at the corner" When the soldier returns the answer at his asking another time he gets upset. But at parting the soldier asks him the question and the little boy gets his spirit back by again giving the answer. More important the soldier and the little girl in some way assauge each other's loneliness. She is lonely for her father who has been lost in the war. He is lonely, lonely.

The scene then changes to an Army headquarters in the heart of the European theatre. The same soldier is on the verge of breakdown when he receives a letter from Esme , which somehow brings him back to a sense that there is something beautiful, whole , humane in the world, something worth living for.

The story of course must be read to be felt truly. My summary is poor. It is such a beautiful story.

I truly suggest you read it. "It will make you laugh. It will make you cry. And you will never forget it."

Same book as Nine Stories...

Excellent book of short stories. Here's the deal as I understand it. This title was the English name for the book, "Nine Stories" because of the popularity of the Esme story in England. Either book is the same. Classic Salinger. His last long story published only in the New Yorker, is available on the New Yorker DVD collection which is very cheap online these days. Google it. Ciao.
