Bennett's The Dramatic Universe is a neglected masterpiece

John Godolphin Bennett, a polymath English wisdom-seeker and scientific theorist, lived from 1897 to 1974. His vision of a dramatic universe in which the efforts we make for transformation, both individually and collectively, really do have a cosmic theological significance and in which there is real hazard and a real chance of failure is one of the most sophisticated and significant attempts in the 20th century to bring deep science together with deep theology. And yet it remains almost totally unknown to contemporary thought and discussion.

Bennett takes a systems and complexity approach throughout the four volumes of The Dramatic Universe and applies it first, in Volume 1, to the philosophy of the natural world using a six-dimensional geometric framework. The appendices to Volume 1 outline the mathematics of this framework and reflect Bennett's co-authored article "Unified Field Theory in a Curvature-Free Five Dimensional Manifold," published in Proceedings of the Royal Society of London A, 1949 198, 39-61, doi: 10 .1098/rspa.1949.0086.

Volume 1 of The Dramatic Universe, dealing primarily with the realm of fact, appeared in 1956. Volume 2, dealing with the realm of will, consciousness, and values, appeared in 1961. Subsequently came Volume 3, which refined Bennett's systems approach and applied it to additional topics. Volume 4 appeared in 1965 and dealt primarily with time, eternity, hazard, and history, taking the view that evolution and history show the punctuated "guidance" of intelligence on a superhuman scale but an intelligence that is not all-powerful or all-knowing, Volume 4 looks presciently to the future of humanity on Earth and outlines the need for personal and social transformation, taking the idea of transformation in a very deep and serious way.

On top of this, for 11 years, from 1963 to 1974, the Institute for the Comparative Study of History, Philosophy and the Sciences, which Bennett was central in founding in roughly 1946, published a journal titled Systematics in which the systems approach adopted by Bennett was refined and applied by a number of his students to a variety of topics.

Despite all this, Bennett's work seems to be almost totally unknown to contemporary systems science, to metaphysics, to consciousness studies, or to the science-and-religion debate as it occurs in English and American academia.

This is highly unfortunate since Bennett's work in metaphysics represents represents and new application of systems thinking to that topic, while his work in theology reflects a both more original and more structured and systematic approach to "spiritual cosmology" than the culturally parochial cosmic Christology of Teilhard de Chardin, whose Omega Point concept Bennett in fact criticizes. Bennett's work reflects his serious personal contact and experience with several religious systems of thought, including Sufism and Hinduism in addition to Christianity, and with many remarkable individuals. He saw the Baha'i revelation as a promising harbinger of what he called the Synergic Epoch that humanity was beginning to enter and which would utterly transform our ways of thinking and living on Earth.

The reasons for Bennett's neglect are complex. His originality and the consequent need for new nomenclature is one reason. His comprehensiveness and simultaneous breadth and depth is another. Third, he was a perpetual student and explorer, and it was hard for him to settle on a limited set of results.

A fourth reason is that, although widely read in terms of Western philosophy, he did not make academic philosophy the center of his life, nor did he publish other articles in philosophic journals other than his own journal Systematics. Instead, he was deeply occupied with the practical psychological and spiritual needs of his students and in finding ways to combine ideas with the effort of personal transformation that he saw to be necessary if humanity were to avert the catastrophes he foresaw for the 21st century. He worked for the future by helping individuals to see and feel what they truly needed to be.

Whatever the reasons, Bennett's work does not deserve the neglect it has received, and PhD candidates in topics relating to science, religion, and the themes of unlocking divine action frequently encountered in the work of scholars connected with the Center for Theology and the Natural Sciences need to start reading The Dramatic Universe and getting to work on a critical analysis and exposition of his ideas.

A Masterpiece, now thankfully in Kindle format

Thanks to the editors of these books in electronic format, for the books will be more readily available to more people, specially those of us who don't live in the U.S. or Europe.

This first half of the first volume of The Dramatic Universe is indeed a more manageable size than the whole volume 1. I hope we will be able to purchase the rest of this Magnum Opus in kindle format sooner than later. Will there be seven more "half volumes"?

The book is marvelous: it undertakes the huge work of redefining all we think we know from a wider perspective, thus enabling us to view the universe, and our place and role in its life anew, in a more active way.

It is not an easy read, but it is a very worthy one, one that could help change your view of yourself and your purpose in life.

Buy Cycle

I read this book from cover to cover twice, back to back. The booked is now pretty marked up with underlinings from my Sharpie pen and I have taken nine pages of notes in my Moleskine notebook from it.

There are five parts to the book and the authors do a great job at defining and then supporting with illustrations and examples. They define the Optimal Salesperson (I), discuss how they get motivated (II) and the tools they must possess (III), and then the meat and potatoes of the book for me was identifying hidden obstacles (IV) and how to apply them to specific parts of the selling process (V).

One of the many takeaways I gained from the book was that of identifying the hidden obstacle of a Sales Rep's buying cycle. A Sales Rep will find it hard to expect their clients to buy different from the way they themselves will buy, referenced as a non-supportive buy cycle in the book. I have a report that tracks first night closes vs. the overall close rate of each Rep so I pulled that report for a complete year. I looked at two of my top Reps who produced nearly the same volume and compared their first time close rates. The Rep with the highest first time close is one of those guys that goes out and buys what he wants when he wants it. He's the guy that will buy every book offered at a seminar and if somebody is selling Girl Scout cookies in the office, they are going to get an order from him. This is not to say that he spends his money frivolously, he just makes a decision and goes with it.

The Rep with the lower first time close rate is a shopper. He will go from store to store and do loads of research on-line investing valuable time before he finally decides on making a purchase. Considering that time is money, how much does he really save? So he empathizes with a client that "needs to get other quotes" or "wants to sleep on it."

In a sales meeting I had a lot of fun with this concept of "buy cycle". Without naming names I described the characteristics of the higher first night closer and that of the lower fist night closer. As I was setting this up I could see each Rep identifying with which category they were in and then I revealed the numbers from the report on the overhead. It was a revelation to my lower first night closer that he was working twice as hard as the other guy producing the same bottom line volume because of his own buy cycle. Now that we have identified his hidden obstacle we can work towards overcoming it and making him better

Just identifying it may have done that. He came up to me shortly after that meeting telling me that he'd been thinking about taking his daughter to a Yo-Yo Ma concert for her birthday. This usually would have required a lot of shopping around and bargaining on ebay and then he would have to figure out the best section to sit in, etc. He told me that as a result of that meeting he decided to just purchase the tickets immediately and to get seats in the front middle section so they could see Yo-Yo up close. He said he realized his daughter deserved the best seats for her special night and he didn't need to waste a lot of time on getting what he decided he wanted.

This is just one example of what I learned from this book but if it were all I got, I think it was well worth the read.

In their summary on page 241 they say, "The "hard" work of sales is overcoming the hidden weaknesses that hold you back." That is so true.

I will say that one small negative is that the editing of the book was poorly done as it is covered with typographical errors throughout which was very distracting for me.

Beyond motivation and follow through

All the tactics and enthusiasm in the world may not be enough to overcome belief system limitations -- and not just for sales people, but for would-be deal makers, those growing their own businesses and anyone else promoting an idea. The hidden obstacles examined in parts four and five of the book lay bare the reasons why even dilligent, competent, optimistic people fail to reach their full potential.
