About the Author
Gary Norden has been trading for over 25 years. He started his trading career at the age of just 18 trading equity derivatives and was the youngest ever trader in the firm’s history. He went on to enjoy a successful career as a trader in the City of London. At the age of 23 he became Head of LIFFE Options for NatWest Markets and he later held senior trading positions at Credit Lyonnais Rouse and ING Financial Markets.
Gary has also spent many years trading futures and options with his own capital both in the trading pits of LIFFE and on computerised markets.
Since moving to Australia in 2003 Gary has developed an international reputation as a financial markets consultant, trading mentor and as an author.
Gary’s first book, Technical Analysis and the Active Trader was published in 2005 and reveals the unreliability of technical analysis. Bedrock technical analysis assumptions were exposed as little more than poorly performing rules of thumb. The book was also translated into Chinese and Korean. A rare gem of a trading book

Reading the early chapters of this book, I was laughing and shaking my head and asking myself "How on earth did Gary convince Wiley to publish this book?".
I have to give some respect to Wiley for publishing this. The bottom line is that almost all trading books are useless. So when a book comes out and explains why this is so, you have to give the publisher some credit for letting it go to market.
Part 1
This book starts out with a look at the "buy side" and "sell side" of the financial industry and why the "financial junk food industry" targets retail traders. If you are an aspiring trader and you don't know what this terminology means, that alone is worth the price of the book. It proposes that you understand the motivations of those on the sell side and that you break free from it and start understanding what those on the buy side do. After all - it's the buy siders you need to be trading like, not the sell siders - because those on the sell side aren't actually trading.
Part 2
The book then takes a look at the knowledge you need to trade and what sort of things you should be looking at when making trading decisions. It discusses external factors that can give you a clue as to what is happening in your market as well as how to manage and size your positions accordingly The focus here is not to give you a cookie cutter formula but to give you things you can observe day in day out to get a good handle on your target markets. For those looking for a cookie cutter formula - go back and read Part 1 again!
Part 3
The final section looks at more advanced concepts. In my mind the most important being "pricing in". In fact, to me this should be called "mandatory" not "advanced". For me, this was the most significant factor in my trading success. This is about how you perceive what is moving the markets and how important it is to understand the concept of "reflexivity". More that a few stock market crashes have been caused by "reflexivity", so for that reason alone, it should be understood. The book then discusses how to observe and anticipate volatility changes and react appropriately. Finally, it talks about how to become the bookmaker and not the punter in the markets.
There's something for everyone in this book. The more advanced traders will get more out of the latter chapters of the book - although by advanced, I mean "people that actually make money trading" and not "people that know a lot about candlesticks".
If you take trading seriously, or wonder why after 100 "how to" trading books, you are still no closer to making a profit - you should pay attention to this book.

The hard truth about the trading industry

The information written here in this book will be a tough pill to swallow for traders who have been using traditional technical analysis (e.g. support/resistance levels and oscillators). For those that are new and thinking of getting into this business, this book will definitely reduce years from the steep learning curve.
Gary reveals what really goes on in the professional trading rooms and how the average retail trader is probably way over their head in trying to win this game.
At the end of the day, the markets really are just one big ol' shell game. Why did a market stop selling off there? Why is it pulling back? Did it hit support or resistance? Who cares! Trade the move, make your money and get out! Too often, the retailer spends too much time trying to fit the actions of the market into a logical set of rules or parameters (BACK TESTING), and not enough time just looking at the market and trading the order flow.
This book will change that mindset, and hopefully help you break out of that endless and unprofitable cycle of following indicators/gurus/alerts.

An excellent counter view to what is being sold to retail traders in the financial industry

I came across Gary's book by chance and found it to provide excellent insight into professional trading not easily found anywhere else.
Retail traders starting on their journey are bombarded by marketing featuring an endless number of easy, profitable money making strategies, all sorts of market theories and a promise of becoming rich by simply using the latest indicators, robots or trading a certain market.
The reality of the real work required to become a professional trader is simply not promoted by the financial industry.
As a retail trader myself and making my way through the steep learning curve that many aspiring traders go through I can honestly say that Gary's insights are a refreshing read and have a lot more depth than the myriad of other things I have read.
In this book Gary starts by dispelling many of the myths that are widely promoted by the financial marketers and then goes on to discuss why its so easy to be fooled by promoters.
Gary then goes on to discuss the mindset of professional traders which really makes you ask a question that I think is very important - why are you trading?
The middle part of the book focuses on what Gary sees as the foundation of trading and an important aspect that most retail traders avoid which is understanding the context surrounding a trade.
Other topics include treating trading as a business and money management.
Finally, what I felt was the most valuable part of the book was where Gary discusses the concepts of Pricing in and Volatility. These concepts are fascinating and explained in a very straight forward way which has given me much food for thought.
In the final chapter Gary touches on order flow trading as an approach he feels is worthwhile and may be suited to some.
Overall there are no easy get rich strategies in this book, but I think there is a lot of value in understanding trading from a professionals point of view.
One thing I have learned in trading is that it's always worthwhile analysing an alternative point of view and in some way reading Gary's book provides an excellent counter view to what is being sold to retail traders in the financial industry and for that reason alone it is well worth reading.
