Opens your eyes to the many injustices minorities continue to face today that they faced 200 years ago. I rented this book, but I may purchase it in the future. Definitely recommend this one.

Katie Whitaker received an MA in philosophy from the University of Chicago. She received a Ph.D. in the history of science at Cambridge, where she was awarded the Thirlwall Prize and Medal in 1997 for the best original historical research by a Cambridge scholar under thirty. She lives in Yorkshire, England.

An interesting woman, a supportive husband

We 21st century women should never stop being grateful for having been born at this historical juncture. So much of what we take for granted was denied to many, many women in history, as the story of Margaret Newcastle makes abundantly clear.

17th century women were supposed to be self-effacing and obedient to the males in their family --- fathers and brothers while unmarried, husbands after marriage, male children in widowhood. Any attempts at intellectual pursuits ---or any kind of personal achievement or merit outside the domestic sphere--- stood a serious risk of being ridiculed or scorned. Interestingly, it was other females who were sometimes the harshest critics of those who dared to flout convention.

But Margaret Cavendish, Duchess of Newcastle, was not an ordinary woman. She was fascinated by the world around her --- colours, shapes, sounds, textures, human beings and animals, celestial bodies... she hungered for knowledge and information. By her own admission, she also yearned for approval and recognition. And, despite her poor education (common to most women of her time) and possible dyslexia or some similar problem, she was a prolific writer. She wrote plays, physics and philosophy tracts, memoirs, poetry, a biography of her husband. And, far from modestly circulating these works among friends, as other women writers did, she actively sought publication and recognition, sending her books to scholars and universities and debating with learned men about current discoveries and issues. Some considered her a wonder, some thought her an eccentric --- but there can be no doubt that she made an impression on many of her contemporaries.

In choosing the life of a 'learned woman' and deliberately turning her back on traditional female roles and activities, Margaret was lucky to have the continued encouragement and support of her much older husband, a royalist nobleman with similar intellectual interests. Indeed, like a previous reviewer said, her high social status and her husband's continued support ensured that opposition was never too outspoken or vocal.

The merit of her works is rather questionable --- I adhere to the opinion that, had it not been for William's endorsement of her books, she would have undergone humiliations much worse than the mild mockery and skepticism she sometimes encountered. One of the flaws of Katie Whitaker's otherwise painstaking essay is that it curiously omits any clear or balanced assessment of the value of Margaret's output. Margaret, who confessed that she (at least in the early years of her writing career) could not be bothered to read much, and whose scientific training was reduced to conversations with her husband and other noblemen who dabbled in physics and chemistry, did not think it arrogant to write lengthy books expounding on her opinions, or to debate with scientists and philosophers. One gets the definite feeling that she enjoyed writing more than she did studying. Certainly she is not taken seriously, either as a scientific or philosophical writer, by anyone today --- and her plays and stories don't seem to have made it across the centuries either.

Whitaker also chooses not to dwell on her greed and the avid and unkindly way in which she sought to deprive her husband's children of their rightful inheritance --- or on her harsh treatment of her husband's impoverished tenants, for that matter. These are barely mentioned, with no critical judgment. Yet I felt that, as the less appealing traits of an otherwise commendable woman, they should have been analyzed.

Another problem I had with this book (admittedly not the author's fault) was the extremely small and cramped print, which made it very difficult to read. It's a pity that such an interesting story should be disseminated in such a cheap, sloppy edition.

But my overall assessment of the book is positive. The story is well told --- and, whether or not her works had any real merit, or at least serious study behind them, the woman herself was no doubt fascinating. No less fascinating is the extraordinary husband who defied ridicule and contempt by his constant encouragement of her. The story of Margaret Cavendish is, in that sense, a moving story, and one that should make every woman grateful for equality and other things we take for granted. Especially since there are still, in our 'modern' world, millions of women who don't enjoy them.

Interesting, but a bit dry

I knew nothing about Margaret, and she was definitely an interesting person. I did feel that this book was a bit too dry at times - I could have done without a lot of the very detailed discussion of their financial troubles. Even though I didn't love the book, I liked it enough that I'd recommend it to other fans of this era of history.

A rambling journey through a chaotic mind

Andrew tells a dark tale, with a knack for witty phrases, punny puns, and humorous pop-culture references. I would be lying if I claimed to know half of what he is talking about, but he places it all in the context of someone struggling with psychological issues, trying to make a way in the "normal" world. Having known Andrew personally, for many years, this piece characterizes him, quite well. If you read this, you get a true sense of Andrew, who he is, where he comes from, and what he has struggled with. Andrew rambles on, as is his nature, but this rambling is punctuated by touching vignettes of life in the county mental health system. Andrew is not a professional author, so don't expect a polished text. What you will get is a very personal memoir, with lots of references to religions, both Eastern, Western, and otherwise.

Insanity or Epiphany Illusory

I would recommend this book to anyone who has a relative or friend that is bipolar.
This gives a look into the mindset of one such man and his journey of mental illness
that needs to be explored and examined much more thoroughly that it has been. Although
at times you can see his pain there are some very comical moments that will make you glad
you took the journey. This reader can only hope that there will a concerted effort of
more resources and help given to this illness in the very near future.

The Anatomy of Command

"In Harm's Way" has always been a favorite movie, but only recently did I realize it was based upon this book. Luckily, Amazon provided a copy of this out-of-print treasure.

James Bassett, Captain, US Naval Reserve (retired), handled Admiral William F. Halsey's press relations from the Guadalcanal campaign to the Japanese surrender in Tokyo Bay. While what he wrote was fiction, he drew from actual events and people to create a fascinating story of the Pacific War in a backwater area, with insufficient resources to do what was required and too far from the other operational areas to get timely support, if those areas even had the means to support so early in the US' involvement in WWII.

From Pearl Harbor into late 1942, we are privy to Captain, then Admiral, Rockwell Torrey's thought processes and inner turmoil that accompanies many fateful decisions. We see the human behind a cold and distant exterior, and view the interplay of commanders and those they command. Torrey is assigned the impossible--to get a stalled operation moving, mount an invasion against a supposedly impregnable stronghold, and stop the enemy's drive against overwhelming odds--while dealing with a hesitant and politically powerful senior area commander and his former senator aide.

The story also contains one of the most vivid descriptions of a modern sea battle I've ever read. Bassett really knew how to pull the reader into the story and keep us there until the ending.

This book is a keeper, and I hope it will very soon be available on Kindle.

Wonderful Book That Outshines Film

Rockwell Torrey is a career naval captain who has served since World War I. Now it is the dawn of another world war as his ship patrols outside Pearl Harbor. His world has been somewhat sheltered since his marriage failed years before. He goes nowhere and mingles with no one. With the outbreak of the war his past begins to emerge in the form of a son he barely knew. He also finds love again, but with the war taking front seat, he must balance his personal life with his tasks in the navy. He must deal with egos of other commanders while striving to do his job. A monumental task while dealing with those who are trying to advance in rank and glory. These do not concern him. Along the way he must deal with the antics of his friend Paul Eddington whose life is a disater. In the end he must risk sacrificing himself and his command to save a landing force and everyone he cares about. This book was made into an epic movie about 1965 which is a wonderful film. The book of course goes into more detail about everyone and their lives. If you like either or the other both are great pieces of work.

About a WWII Pacific Naval Operation

The movie "In Harm's Way" with John Wayne, Kirk Douglas and Patricia Neal among others was made from this novel, The story of Captain and later Rear Admiral Rockwell Torrey beginning with the Pearl Harbor attack and then being put in charge of a bogged down operation from a hesitant Vice Admiral and all the trials and tribulations involved therein, a little romance with Nurse Maggie Haynes and getting to know his estranged son Jere. The movie stays fairly true to the book.

The editor of this collection, Peggy Poole, is herself a poet, and was drawn to the magic of railways when changing trains at Preston station, which led to the publication of this anthology. The poems range from the simply lyrical to the rudely mechanical, and are grouped in six themes to represent the different aspects of rail travel.

Marigolds grow wild on platforms - a must-have for poetry lovers

Marigolds Grow Wild On Platforms is an anthology of railway poetry selected by well-regarded British poet Peggy Poole. The selection of poems could not be more carefully wrought, nor more tasteful and delicate. Poole is known for her own work - her most recent book, Cooee, has garnered favorable and praising reviews - but here she shows her skill as an editor. It is difficult to believe that a poet can so well craft their own work and recognize the best in others, but Poole assumes both talents, and has successfully created one of the most intriguing anthologies on a topic that may have been hard to sell, but that she has rendered necessary.
