From Publishers Weekly
Simplicity rules in this revised and expanded edition of one of the top three bestselling Betty Crocker cookbooks. Of the 450 easy-to-follow recipes culled from over 50 countries, more than 40% are new. Listed by their ethnic names, with English and phonetic pronunciation given, and quicker and easier to prepare than their original versions, recipes for these dishes, mostly down-to-earth country fare, retain their authenticity. Included are such well-known classics as French vegetable ragout (ratatouille), Russian salmon loaf (coulibiac), Irish stew and Swedish rye bread (limpa), as well as lesser-known African vegetable stew (vegetable biryani) and Hungarian fish with sour cream (betyar fogas). At heart a book intended for the uninitiated cook, the volume includes a glossary of foreign ingredients and terms, informative sidebar explanations, and a regional and general index. The color photography is unexceptional. 200,000 first printing ; first serial to Family Circle; Literary Guild selection.

From Library Journal
The recipes in the revised edition (40 percent new recipes) of Betty Crocker's International Cookbook ( LJ 12/15/80) are fairly predictable; there are indeed recipes from around the world, and this edition includes many ingredients unheard of in the past (lemongrass, harissa, fresh ginger). Many of the dishes, however, are all too familiar, and the authenticity of some recipes is questionable. The New York Times books are the standards, but the first edition of this was a runaway best seller, and there will be demand for this.

Best cookbook ever
By Dawn M. Rodriguez
I LOVE this cookbook. It's the only cookbook that I can honestly say that I haven't made a single bad dish from. The dishes are authentic as well. Just wish it was in print so I could give all my friends copies, then they wouldn't always be asking for the recipe. I have to admit that I didn't expect such a good, authentic international cookbook from Betty Crocker, but she sure delivered this time.

WOW! An Italian's perspective...
By Katerina
I purchased this used cookbook and have one question, "Why would anyone have given this gem up?" I am impressed with the simple ingredients and easy to follow directions. My 100% Greek mother-in-law has shown me (numerous times) how to create her son's favorite dishes. Simply put, (1) she made it too hard to follow, (2) I didn't have time to write anything down, and (3) I couldn't remember what I needed to. I've gotten around this dilemma with the help of Betty Crocker. The dishes are simple, delicious, and authentic. As far as my Italian favorites...they're just as good as my grandmother's recipes (***whispering***if not better)! I wish the book had more pictures, but the directions are so well written that the need for pictures is diminished substantially. I have NEVER written a review, but this book is worth my effort.

Coming from a person who loves to cook & eat, I find this book to be a culinary masterpiece. Oh, and I'm back on the good side of my mother-in-law (lol)!

Buy a used copy!!
By Dr. Lee D. Carlson
This cookbook is packed full of exotic but simple recipes and is a continuing source of culinary delight. The ingredients are readily available and the writing is very clear, with photographs for some of the dishes. Some of my favorite recipes are: - Sopa de Tortilla - Gazpacho (decrease the red wine vinegar to 1/4 cup) - Paella (open the clams and drain before cooking) - Coulibiac (use fresh dill weed only!) - Vatapa - Linguine con Vongole Bianco (al dente for linguine!!) - Chicken Curry - Coucous with Chicken - Gai Ding (the cashews should be raw) - Moui Nagden (steam green peppers and add them when the rest of the dish has cooked) - Carne Rellena - Feijoada - Cassoulet - Moussaka (use young eggplants) - Spanokopita - Irish Soda Bread

As ancient as agriculture itself, plant breeding is one of civilization\'s oldest activities. Today, world food production is more dependent than ever on the successful cultivation of only a handful of major crops, while continuing advances in agriculture rely on successfully breeding new varieties that are well-adapted to their human-influenced ecological circumstances. Plant breeding involves elements of both natural and cultural selection-a process which operates on individual plants and on plant populations. This book offers the most recent detailed knowledge of plant reproduction and their environmental interaction, which can help guide new breeding programs and help insure continuing progress in providing more food for growing populations produced with better care of the environment.

The idea of light as an integral part of all life and creation was evident since the beginning of time. From the very first sunrise, to the daily sunsets of the present, we continue to be awed by the beauty, power, life creating and life sustaining properties and emanations of light. The rainbow, truly a miracle of nature, confirms not only the importance of color, but specifically those portions of the spectrum for which the human organism is attuned.During the early 1920s, science had begun to speculate that the power of light was primarily transmitted to the core of the human organism by the organ of sight - the eyes. It was in that same period of time that one man, Dr. Harry Riley Spitler, theorized in great detail the role of the eyes in phototransduction, as well as the role of light and color in total organismic function and development. Most of his work has been scientifically validated, and represents the foundation of one of today's most advanced approaches to phototherapy: syntonics.Syntonics, utilized clinically for more than sixty years within the field of Optometry, is that branch of ocular science dealing with the application of selected visible light frequencies through the eyes. This ocular application of light has been utilized with great success in the treatment of various visual dysfunctions associated with strabismus, amblyopia, accomodative/convergence problems, visual field constrictions, head trauma, and visually related learning problems. The results of these relatively short term treatments usually yield significant improvements in visual skills, visual field size, memory, general performance, behavior, mood, and academic achievement. Now we notice that phototherapy is becoming an increasingly prevalent therapeutic tool wi

Good, but needs to be revised.
By loren lillis
This book is from the 1940s and deserves to be kept in print, but it also needs to be revised and updated. For example, the theory of personality it is based on is obsolete. We have learned a tremendous amount in neurology which needs to be incorporated into the field.

Honey, I'm Home!: Sitcoms: Selling The American Dream, by Gerard Jones

Gerard Jones's Honey, I'm Home! has been widely acclaimed as the premier primer on America's Morality Plays--the TV situation comedies that have chained us to our Barcaloungers ever since Lucy first bawled her way into our hearts. Recalling the best and worst the sitcoms have had to offer, Jones recreates their atmosphere and their times with wisdom and style; paralleling the memory-lane trip is his shrewd and provocative assessment of the sitcom's influence on modern society. From Father Knows Best to Married...with Children, from the empty calories of The Brady Bunch to the social commentary of All in the Family, Honey, I'm Home! is a connoisseur's guide to the sitcom world--where everybody knows your name, and any problem can be solved in twenty-two minutes, plus commercials.

From Publishers Weekly
Jones, coauthor of The Beaver Papers, proves a perceptive and penetrating observer of pop culture. At the outset he makes it clear that the TV sitcom is "a corporate product . . . a mass consumption commodity," yet does not downplay its importance as an indicator of public taste and, more importantly, as a molder of that taste. He also points out that situation comedy from the '50s to the '90s has had the same plotline: a character develops a desire that runs counter to the welfare of the group (whether family, office staff or dedicated barflies) and eventually abandons his or her selfish goals. Jones analyzes past comedies for their regional and age-group appeal, offering thoughtful comments on shows from I Love Lucy through All in the Family to The Simpsons. Those who regard television with contempt may consider that Jones uses a bulldozer on a sandcastle, but can anyone deny his argument that TV sitcoms are enormously influential? Photos not seen by PW.

From Library Journal
Jones has written a thorough analysis of the sociological impact of television sitcoms from their beginnings in radio. While always a popular format, the half-hour comedy has reflected changing trends in society, helped the average person cope with these changes in a nonthreatening way by laughing at them, and most of all sold the advertiser's product. From the early classic I Love Lucy to The Mary Tyler Moore Show and All in the Family , which changed the face of television in the 1970s and set the standards for all sitcoms since that time, up to Cheers and The Simpsons , Jones's lively and insightful presentation will amuse as well as provoke thought.

From Kirkus Reviews
An I Love Lucy to Cheers run-through of sitcom as both product and ``foggy'' mirror of our corporate culture, by the coauthor of The Beaver Papers and The Comic Book Heroes (neither reviewed). Jones considers situation comedies over the past four decades against a broad-brushed cultural setting, arguing that sitcom ``ideals''--particularly the ``consensual solution''--are those ``on which modern bureaucratic business and government are founded.'' ``The most successful,'' he claims, possess ``a particularly shrewd insight into the concerns of the vast American public.'' Jones champions the pioneering 1951 Lucy and its ``theater of battle'' (``the mad housewife,'' he says, ``never favored the `corporate' resolutions''), and rails against the artificial, sugary, suburban moral lesson of Father Knows Best. That show and some of its many imitators (e.g., Bachelor Father, Leave it to Beaver, and The Dick Van Dyke Show) he calls ``strangely seductive horrors,'' ``products of profound national confusion masquerading as confidence.'' As Jones analyzes the premises and plots of Dobie Gillis, The Beverly Hillbillies, Bewitched, Maude, etc., he also offers such interesting TV facts as that, in both 1968 and 1969, the networks passed up All in the Family--which, like The Mary Tyler Moore Show, abandoned ``postwar optimism.'' Jones is at his best when homing in on what makes particular shows and characters tick--pinpointing The Honeymooners' ``venom of a frustrated Brooklyn blue-collar marriage,'' or Leave It To Beaver's ``funniest and sharpest creation'': the ``pathetically ridiculous'' Eddie Haskell. But the author is less convincing when he sees ``the rebellious currents....hinted at'' by Eddie as forerunners to SDS and a ``nascent women's liberation movement.'' In early 1991, Jones notes, Cheers, that clubhouse ``for the alienated,'' still held its own against the ``feel-good'' Cosby show. Competent but uneven, and perhaps overly demanding of the most popular form of American TV as sociological oracle. The Television Sitcom as a Barometer of the Post World War II Zeitgeist
By Cheryl Lynn Blum
As an avid watcher of family-based situation comedies from the late 1950's to the early 1970's, I looked forward every September to the trifecta of the Jewish High Holy Days, the first day of school, and the new television season, with the last of these in fact the first of these. I couldn't wait to tune in to the family sitcoms broadcast in the early evenings to see what new furniture Lucy had in her apartment, what new apartment Danny Thomas's TV family had moved on up to, and what new fashions Marlo Thomas's "That Girl" modeled. But when in 1975 we were introduced to the family of women who were taking life one day at a time, it marked the first time that a family unit was actually down-sizing, had less than they had the season before, and were struggling to hold onto whatever they could of the declining American Dream.
Jones's book neatly covers the arc of pop mass culture from the early radio serials, most of which I have only heard of second-hand, to the development of prime-time situation comedies that centered around families. Later "sitcoms" such as M*A*S*H and Soap interested me less, but I appreciated the overview that the book provides.
Situation comedies that were centered around World War II veteran fathers and Baby Boom children (although while we were living through the Baby Boom, we didn't know it at the time; we only knew that in our Long Island community new schools were being built on every vacant lot on every available plot of land) and their pearl-wearing, high-heel-while-vacuuming mothers, not only reflected our lives but helped shape them as well. Fathers worked at jobs that required suit and tie, children went to college (but, oddly, usually tried living in a dorm first, then found that they were happier living back home with their parents -- I'm looking at you, Mary Stone), telling us that even when we are grown up with a driver's license and wearing panty-girdles and stockings, there's really no place like home. (What nice girl would want to live away from home before she got married, anyway? Marlo Thomas had to struggle against that question when trying to make "That Girl"s' Ann Marie into a modern career woman, living alone in New York City. Each week that girl was working another zany angle to keep herself financially able to live in her own apartment in the City (while her father impatiently waited for her to fail).
A few touches that I remember so well, but Jones might have overlooked: Donna Reed's perfect wife-and-mother doppleganger Donna Stone did not do her cleaning in pearls and high heels. One time a friend asked her, "How do you do it?" and she replied, "Oh I have a girl in once a week to clean." So you have heard it here: Donna Stone had a cleaning "girl." But she probably made the weekly meat loaf herself.
And Jones misses entirely the unspoken, aching pain of the ironically-named, "Honeymooners." There was no child. There was a husband and wife, in an apartment building in New York City, in the decades after World War II, but no baby. Jackie Gleason had been asked about that, and his reply had been that if there had been a child in the "family," that every episode would have to refer to the child, have the child in one or more scenes, or have to explain where the child was. Indeed, it would have changed the dynamics of the series. But there was one heartbreaking episode when Ralph and Alice Kramden do try to adopt a child, but the birth mother changes her mind, and takes the baby back. After that, Ralph and Alice never speak about a child again.
And Jones' deep pyschological probing of the role that Eddie Haskell played in the world of "Leave it to Beaver"? If you watched the show in the 1950's, you would have seen typical sitcom children living in a world of their own, often with Eddie Haskell pulling something over on Ward and June. But if you can, watch this show again as an adult. Ward and June were very much aware of Eddie's tactics, and the small bits of stage business that they do (knowing glances at each other, and barely-surpressed smiles) and you'll see a different show from the one you watched as a kid.
"Honey, I'm Home" is a treat for the generation that grew up idolizing the suburban sitcom families of post-World War II America. In post-Vietnam, post-Desert Storm, and mid- the endless Operation Enduring Freedom, it returns us to the carefree days of yesteryear, making the past so much more satisfying than the present.

This book is well-written, witty, informative, provocative..
By A Customer
...and pretty thorough! The book examines American ideas of family & gender by examining television's portrayal of the American family through the decades. While the analysis is consistantly sharp, intelligent, and revealing, the writing is always clear, frequently funny, and occassionally evokes nostalgia.
You will be surprised at the degree to which-- and the manner in which-- changes in the TV's sitcom families reflect changes in American culture and values. Do you think Hollywood would have even conceived of 'The Brady Bunch'-- an instant family created by the marriage of two previously married individuals-- back in Ozzy & Harriet's 1950's? What can you say about a decade in which George Jefferson, Archie Bunker, and JJ from 'Good Times' were central characters in the weekly line-up?
The author does an excellent job of presenting the parallel changes taking place in society and on TV over the past few decades. This book is a fascinating piece of cultural commentary in which the author uses seemingly innocuous television shows to construct a picture of American values in much the same way that an archaeologist constructs an image of a society by making inferences from the artifacts it has left behind.

Readable and Pithy
By Theseus
I treasure this book.

Jones is one of our most persuasive commentators on American pop culture. His survey on the development of the sitcom is engaging, aesthetically rigorous, and does an admirable job placing television comedy within some larger contexts. (Personally, I wish he had extended back to American comedic writing on the stage in the 1920's and 1930's....)

There's only one flaw with this book. It stops in the early 1990's. If only some publisher would get behind an updated version so profitable ventures and (arguably) cultural touchstones such as The Cosby Show and Friends could be included.

A Real How to Guide
By John Chancellor
When I mention branding to most small business owners or solo-preneurs, their eyes glaze over, generally followed with some comment about branding being for the big guys, like Coca-Cola or Toyota.

The first lesson that Karen Kang, the author or Branding Pays, teaches is that we all - business owners, solo entrepreneurs, employees and prospective employees all have a brand. It might be helpful to look at branding in a different way. Instead of branding, think of how you are perceived by others. Branding is simply how others see us. Everyone has a brand. Some people choose to be pro-active about making sure their brand is a true reflection of who they are.

If you fail to manage your brand, it is highly unlikely that others will always see the best in you. They can and will develop incorrect perceptions of who you are. As the title of the book says, Branding Pays. It pays to be active and manage your brand.

Ms. Kang discusses some common myths people have against being pro-active with their branding. Often you hear people say, "My work speaks for itself. People can and should judge me on my work." Unfortunately, that is simply not true. Often people never get a good insight into the results you produce. You must be pro-active in letting people know who you are and the good work you do. Ms. Kang goes on to discuss other myths and how believing in them can and will hold you back.

The heart of the book is her five step process for building your own brand. According to Ms. Kang, there are two elements to your brand - these are the rational value you provide and the emotional value. She makes this much easier to understand by using a cake/icing metaphor. The cake is the substance - the rational value, while the icing is the emotional value. For a good cake, you must provide both substance and the decoration. She uses this example throughout the book and it really makes it easy to grasp the difference between and the importance of providing both rational and emotional value.

The five-step system consists of: Positioning, Message, Brand Strategy, Ecosystem and Action Plan. There is a chapter devoted to each step of the system. At the end of each chapter is a summary and action list. Each step in the system is explained in detail with lots of examples of actual cases. There are plenty of templates for the reader to use in creating their own unique brand by working through each step of the system.

This is not a book on theory of branding. Ms. Kang gives a discussion of each step and then walks you through doing that step for your own brand. This book is designed for the reader to work through designing and implementing their own brand. The value of the book is in doing the work necessary to re-brand your business or yourself.

This book is valuable for anyone who is not currently getting the results they want. It will work for and improve the brand of employees in corporate jobs, business owners and solo-entrepreneurs.

The book is well written and easy to read. The concepts are clearly explained and there are plenty of examples to illustrate the concepts in action.

An excellent resource, a real how to guide to help you create the unique brand of you that will resonate with your target audience.

I was provided a review copy of this book.

If you're in the process of attempting to get to the next step of your career this book will be a huge help.
By Blaine Greenfield
BRANDING PAYS: THE FIVE-STEP SYSTEM TO REINVENT YOUR PERSONAL BRAND (BrandingPays Media) by Karen Kang is the perfect book to read if you're in the process of attempting to get to the next step of your career.

The author, a well-known brand strategist and founder/CEO of her own personal branding company, shows how to do this by utilizing a step-by-step approach that's very easy to follow. In addition, she uses her own life-along with many other real-life examples-to show how this can be done.

One key thing to keep in mind, she notes, is your elevator pitch:

* A perfect example of using an elevator pitch to take advantage of an unexpected opportunity is Jenna. Recently, she spotted a CEO of a biotech company eating alone in her local restaurant. She had worked with him briefly at her current firm when he was a senior vice president there, but she wasn't sure he remembered her. Armed with an elevator pitch that she had prepared in advance, she confidently introduced herself. The CEO asked her to sit down and they chatted about her current company and the industry for 15 minutes. When she rose to leave, she told him that if he ever had need for a senior corporate lawyer with strong commercial experience, she would be interested. He had her sit down again, and after another discussion, nearly offered her a job on the spot. Within two weeks, she got her dream job as an executive with this company. Jenna's compelling elevator pitch helped her make favorable impression that led to a great job offer.

I also liked what Kang had to say about the use of social media:

* In social media, your avatar (a photo or illustration that is your personal visual identity) is synonymous with your brand. I encourage people to use the same avatar on all their social media platforms. If you use several different avatars, you are diluting the branding effect. For professionals (unless you are an artist), a photo is preferable to an illustration. Pick one photo that represents you well and use it consistently.

And there were many other useful tidbits, including this one:

* Managing your online reputation is something everyone should do. It can be as simple as doing a Google search on your name. Are the links and images of you that show up on the first page of search results how you want your brand represented? If not, then you have some work to do.

BRANDING PAYS would also make an idea gift for college graduates just starting their professional careers.

Great for anyone wanting to create a brand or reinvent the personal brand they may have
By Alain B. Burrese
“Branding Pays: The Five-Step System to Reinvent Your Personal Brand” by Karen Kang is a great text on determining and implementing your personal brand to succeed in business. Kang, a recognized brand strategist and founder of BrandingPays LLC, has put the knowledge she's gained through helping thousands of professionals with her unique BrandingPays System for personal branding into book form with this guide to reinventing your personal brand.

The text is well organized and laid out in a logical fashion. It reminded me a bit of some of the business books I read in college. There are plenty of graphs and charts to help illustrate Kang's points, and each chapter ends with a summary and action list.

While the book sometimes feels aimed at those in corporate positions, the advice contained in these chapters will also benefit the entrepreneur and small business owner too. The book also contains a chapter on social media basics, and I wish all young people (and some older) would read the parts about people not getting jobs because of what was posted on facebook.

Putting your best foot forward is important, but it is not enough. To get ahead today, having a strategic approach to brand positioning and communication is critical. Kang's five steps of positioning, messages, brand strategy, ecosystems and having an action plan will help readers create the strategic plan to get ahead with a credible personal brand. I recommend it to anyone wanting to create a brand or reinvent the personal brand they may have.

book a bit dated, heavier reading than most
By 5thSealCatholic
Original heavy hitting book written in the early 80's, that had a huge impact, a bit dated. However, it is neither light nor medium reading.

Heavier reading than I would like on this subject(which I am loathe and rare to say), because he spends pages going into philosophical nuance, explaining detail upon detail before moving the subject along. Also many pages are used either refuting statements or in support of those prominent on the scene of the 80's-both politically and philosophically. More suited to someone with a degree in philosophy who would like a book that stays deep and doesnt mind its era punctuated retorts and supports. For todays reader I would suggest searching for a more up to date, lighter reading on the topic.

And speaking of more up to date books topical to our day:
Bad Religion: How We Became a Nation of Heretics
by Ross Douthat, "The Naked Public Square" of our time.

One of Chip's Top Ten (wordsntone.com)
By Chip M. Anderson
This book put my faith to the test: Can I be in the world, but not of it? Neuhaus' "naked public square" refers to the public spaces in American life, which are naked or empty because religion and religious values have been systematically excluded from the public arena and from determination of public policy. This book should be given to every politician-does anyone have a few hundred thousand dollars so we can do that? Get the book and learn how you can clothe the naked public square.
