Excellent intro to SQL

I learned SQL 25 years ago. i wish this book had existed then, instead of the expensive, hard to understand computer books that existed back then. I also bought Mike McGrath's PHP/Mysql and Python books.

Excellent book for those new to SQL

1. Easy to follow along and explains everything in simple language

2. Illustrated with the queries and outputs from MySQL (both Windows and Linux) so you don't get lost

3. Doesn't waste your time with necessary crap, explaining only what's important

4. The book comes with data and scripts so that you can follow along every step of the way

I am extremely happy that I learned the basic of SQL with this book. Highly recommended to those with little previous programming experience. Fast and insightful learning experience.

Nice easy read. Each chapter builds on previous content. Great intro to SQL. Makes a good reference book as well.

International lawyers and certainly academics grappling with the complexities and often the uncertainties of customs law within the European Union will certainly welcome this new book from the Hart Publishing imprint of Bloomsbury.

Thanks to her detailed, thorough and copious research, the author Kathrin Limbach painstakingly constructs a substantially supported and therefore convincing case for – as the title indicates -- uniformity of customs administration in the EU.

One could infer that the aim here is the standardization, or you could call it -- the harmonisation of EU customs law throughout the EU, which, in the fullness of time, might lead to the eventual harmonization of European law in general. But as this possibility is remote at the moment (to say the least), the reform of EU customs law is the logical place to initiate the process of reform.

Certainly the standardization of EU customs law would have a practical value in that it would encourage greater competitiveness and facilitate more trade, the enhancement of trading conditions being original raison d’etre of the original European Economic Community. The vision of Europe as a trading bloc is of course the main reason why the UK became an EU member state.

What the book points up here is something of a paradox. ‘On the one hand,’ says the author ‘the EU is a customs union with its customs law harmonised and enacted centrally on the EU level.’ On the other hand, she adds, ‘EU customs law is applied and implemented by the national customs authorities of the EU member states.’ Customs administration in the EU is therefore in fact, decentralized, which, as you might say, makes things tougher for the efficient functioning of the EU as a Customs Union.

As reform is clearly required, the book touches on the role of the WTO (World Trade Organisation) of which the EU is a member -- and which could conceivably challenge the current status quo. In the meantime, decision makers in this area need detailed guidance and solid information on, for example, the relevant decision-making processes and procedures implemented by the national customs authorities in the EU. In this respect the book excels, with its detailed discussions of tools, mechanisms and strategies.

Part III of the book is especially interesting, calling as it does, for a modernized customs code and an electronic customs initiative as part of a reformed European IT strategy, the facilitation of global trade and greater economic prosperity being the aims in view.

Practitioners and indeed anyone charged with the analysis or interpretation of EU customs law will no doubt find this timely treatise extremely useful. When in particular you consider the extensive footnoting and the twenty page bibliography, we feel that the book functions admirably as a rich resource of recent and current research.

Eye Opening

Of all the books that I read for my masters degree, this was the most interested. I'm sure that all teachers have experienced less than enthusiastic class at one time or another. According to Benson, this is due to a lack of control that students have over their learning process. If the teacher takes too much control, they lose a sense of ownership, and lose their motivation. However, not all students are prepared to take more responsibility for their education. What can be done? What is the research that has been done in this field? Benson outlines the the theories and research on learner autonomy. I recommend this for all teachers, not just English teachers. You might pick up a hint or two.

About the Author

Fritz Wagner is a Research Professor in the Department of Urban Design and Planning at the University of Washington (Seattle). He directs the Northwest Center for Livable Communites and teaches part-time. Before joining UW he was at the University of New Orleans where he founded the College of Urban and Public Affairs and served as its Dean.

Roger Caves is Professor of City Planning, School of Public Affairs, San Diego State University. He received his PhD in Urban Affairs and Public Policy from the University of Delaware in 1982. He is co-author of Planning in the USA, 2nd and 3rd editions (Routledge, 2003, 2008), editor of the Encyclopedia of the City (Routledge, 2005), editor of Exploring Urban America, and author of Land Use Planning: The Ballot Box Revolution. His research areas include urban planning, direct democracy, housing, information technologies and community development, and planning for sustainable development.

Glued to my chair -- AGAIN!

So I'm no literary critic, but the sheer fact that I was glued to my chair and burning the midnight oil AGAIN with Double Digit has to count for something. Double Digit is AHHHHMAAAZING! And I am not surprised. Here are my thoughts:

* I love that there is a potential love triangle. It offers just the right amount of tension to keep things real in the life of a college freshman and it develops Digit's character all the more because we learn about her through the eyes of Bass and through her MIT roommate and classmates. For example, just the idea that she only looks at Bass's face when he is talking to someone else. Classic. Not just for a nerd extraordinaire, but for most teens, right?

* I love that as a young-at-heart-but-mature reader, I knew what John was doing when he let her go in the beginning and felt the tension build in me that she could not receive that information. If you want to reach into the book and shake the main character by the shoulders or slap her across the face until she listens, I think that's pretty engaging.

* I love that Digit has the ability to see the beauty that is at the heart of Jonas Furnis's intention and also the ability to draw the line when the craziness overshadows that intention.

Digit is the Robert Langdon for the young-at-heart/young-adult readers---and I think that excites me more than anything because there is potential for a-whole-lot more to tell where Digit is concerned. Like so many other readers, I have questions!!! And I will be on the edge of my seat waiting for them to be answered.

Double Digit is a fast-paced, engaging read. I highly recommend it!

A fun trip to revisit Digit....

First off, I will say, I'm not in the demo for this book, as I am a full blown adult (on paper at least). I will say I do enjoy good YA fiction though and especially love books that are funny, witty and have women/girls as strong characters. I've noticed over the last several years that you can miss out on some good stuff when you hang out in the adult world only.

I really enjoyed the first book, A Girl Named Digit....I thought it sounded good and I loved the witty writing and the character of Farrah Higgins, known as Digit because her amazing ability to excel at all things mathematical. She becomes an expert at cracking codes, which she has done since she was a young girl with the encouragement of her father. This book takes her back to the villain from the last book as she heads to her freshman year at none other than MIT. With a ecoterrorist at her heels and wanting her dead if she does not help him in his insane plans, to the CIA and the Dept of Defense also at her heals for some (harmless?) code cracking, she is on a run for her life.

I liked the first book best, but still enjoyed her adventures in this book. If you are truly buying for the intended audience, I would say 11 or 12 is about the start of your target audience. The only thing I could see that might be questionable for some parents is the occasional bad word or two. Let's face it, your kids may not be saying them, but they have all heard them, so gear your approval on this one to whether you can take a little of that for the trade-off of a strong, witty, female character. Overall, a good book and one to pick up if you have already read the first book.

My Thoughts: I loved the first novel so when I got the chance to review this one, I jumped right on it! It was just as good!

Double Digit is a real short novel but it has so much to say. We are back once again with Digit aka Farrah. She’s now a freshmen in college and trying to live a normal life. The novel starts out with her dating the FBI agent from the first novel, John. I really like John so much! He’s adorable, caring, and protective.

Digit is the same girl as ever. She’s so stinkin smart! And the things she does and says. Always a riot.

We are introduced to a few new friends, alongside a guy named Bass. I liked Bass, I did. I could feel he took a liking to Digit so I’m not surprised how that friendship blossomed.

Digit is trying to be normal, and do normal things, like go to toga parties. But when she gets kidnapped, things start to go crazy. And to top it off, she hacks into the Department Of Defense to save some time, so this really sets her up for real trouble.

With Jonas Furnis after her mind, and the government wanting to put her behind bars, Digit just can not get a break!

I enjoyed this one. Not quite as much as the first but almost! Its fun, witty, smart! I just wish it was longer. These are just too short!

Overall: I really enjoy Digit! I like John! And I like her new friends. And of course her sweet little brother. And the plot, woohooo! Like it!
